Back in 1992…
Johanna Maheshvari Mosca, Ph.D.: In 1992, having heard about Sedona from friends, I stopped there to visit on a trip to Albuquerque and was amazed at the energy I felt. I then returned to New York, took a sabbatical from my teaching job, sublet my NYC apartment, packed my car, and left New York for Sedona, unaware that I would not return.
I camped out in Sedona forests for about fourteen months, enjoying doing Yoga on the red rocks. Then the idea came to me that following my bliss would be to start Sedona Spirit Yoga and Hiking and guide others to do Yoga amid magnificent red rock vortexes. You can read my story “Go West, Middle-Aged Woman, Go West” and the poem I wrote when I moved into a house that I later rented —
Moved in Today
My mind’s noise
Screeches to a hum
As I leave behind
The city’s pulsing trauma,
Trading subways for switchbacks
And skyscrapers for the red rocks
That beckon me tauntingly
With their mysterious energy.
Like magnets they drew me here
Pulling up my roots—
Decades of security
Discarded like weeds—
A tender transplant that
Guided me home to Sedona
With a knowing of the heart
— Johanna MoscaThen in February 1994, I led my very first Sedona Spirit Yoga & Hiking Retreat. Several days a week, I started leading guests on hikes to Sedona vortex sites and began offering Yoga on hikes in Sedona. I coined the phrase “vortex Yoga hike” as our way of introducing guests to Sedona vortexes and the peace of Yoga. That was right after I spent fourteen consecutive months camping, enjoying Yoga and hiking amid the red rocks. Now, an expert team of Sedona Yoga instructors and I lead your Sedona hikes to the most awesome Sedona hiking trails from a deep, heart connection with the Sedona vortexes, bringing first-hand knowledge from almost two decades of Yoga and hiking in Sedona. To view some of the extraordinary international praise that our tours and retreats have received over the past two decades, visit our In The News page.
What Makes Sedona Spirit Yoga & Hiking Special
HIKES: What makes our Sedona hikes special is that we help you make a deep connection with the sacred energy of the land. On our three or four-hour hikes to Sedona vortexes (with or without Yoga), we walk somewhere between a half mile and two miles, round trip, depending upon your preference. We can refer you to associates if you would like a longer, rigorous hike. On our leisurely vortex Yoga hikes, we guide you to “Relax, Release, Receive and Renew!” Our Sedona Yoga guides lead you to awesome vortex sites and guide you in a meditation to clear your mind, body and spirit, and then set intentions and launch them with powerful energy. We guide you amid the best hiking trails and can make your experience a very gentle, short nature walk, a moderate hike, or a lively jaunt amid Sedona hike trails. In just one hike, we help you access the inner peace and higher consciousness that Sedona vortexes are known for worldwide. Take a look at our guest photo gallery.
RETREATS: What makes our retreats special is the love of Yoga and of Sedona that Johanna has nurtured over two decades and is committed to sharing with retreat guests. We have selected a fine boutique hotel, the Arabella, with a glorious pool, red rock views, and excellent service for deluxe lodging. Johanna Maheshvari is your retreat leader and confidential private coach. She guides retreat guests throughout a week of transformational experiences with her and a team of hand-picked, expert guides, who are all certified Yoga instructors. Having completed at least seven teacher trainings in various styles of Yoga and meditation, Johanna’s repertoire of Yoga certifications and teaching methods is both vast and unique. In her extensive background as a teacher trainer in NYC, Johanna learned that it is vital to start with what the student can do and build upon that in increments with some repetition so that techniques can be fully learned and applied at home. She calls it “teaching for transfer.” And, should you need a private consultation, Johanna will make herself available to work you privately during your retreat—all you have to do is ask.
