Johanna Maheshvari Mosca, Ph.D. is an accomplished author, yoga master and a teacher of teachers. She has extensive background in education, human resource development and public speaking. Her passion is writing to share the ancient wisdom of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras for living in greater peace, harmony and integrity.

Johanna’s first career consisted of twenty-five years as a high school English teacher, staff developer, graduate writing instructor and educational consultant. She earned her PhD in Writing Research and Theory from New York University.

In 1992, after passing two license exams to become a NYC Public High School Principal, Johanna vacationed in Sedona, Arizona, and was inspired to move there. Spending fourteen months camping out in the desert forest of Sedona and doing her own Yoga on the red rocks, Johanna became inspired to launch her own retreat business, Sedona Spirit Yoga & Hiking.

Johanna is the author of two previous books, YogaLife: 10 Steps to Freedom and Cultivate Contentment: Using Ancient Wisdom to Thrive in Today’s World. Her third book, Teen Triumph: 10 Ways to a Winning Life, brings this ancient wisdom to teenagers.

Currently, Johanna enjoys leading self-renewal YogaLife Retreats in Sedona, AZ, with lodging at the Arabella Hotel in the heart of Sedona.  She also writes and does private consulting in both Sedona, AZ, and Encinitas, CA, where she has a vacation home.

Johanna Maheshvari Mosca, Ph.D.: My vision for myself and my students is to make life a moving meditation in which we cultivate ongoing peace and contentment. I have published three books related to living the wisdom of Yoga—YogaLife: 10 Steps to Freedom; Cultivate Contentment: Using Ancient Wisdom to Thrive in Today’s World; and most recently, Teen Triumph: 10 Ways to a Winning Life.

Starting in the 1990’s, I have completed numerous trainings with two 200-hour certifications in Kripalu Yoga and Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy. Then I earned my 500 hours with the International Yoga College, studying mainly with Rama Jyoti Vernon, my teacher for over fifteen years.

I followed that with two weeks in India, studying with TVK Desikachar and his son Kaustub at the Krishnamacharya Mandarim. In recent years, my focus on learning techniques to still the babbling mind has led me to complete two meditation teacher trainings, first a 200-hour certification with the McLean Meditation Institute. Then I went on to pursue my current passion, studying I-Rest (Inner Restoration) Meditation with Richard Miller, and completing his teacher trainings I and II. At present, I am earning my Level III Certification in  iRest Yoga Nidra and enjoying giving complimentary Yoga Nidra sessions to those wanting to soothe stress and trauma.

As a former “teacher specialist” for the NYC Public Schools, I have experience meeting my students at their own level and helping them stretch to the next stage of growth, whatever that might be for each individual. I feel honored and grateful when other beings trust me to guide them in Yoga and consciousness expanding reflection on the spiritual path.
